Celebrating the 11th anniversary of its genesis as a group, Dark Star Orchestra presents its critically acclaimed live show to Deadheads both young and old on Tuesday, November 11 at the Concord Center for the Arts. DSO will also celebrating the release of the new live double DVD set, Ithaca 30 Years Later: The Video, and the group features Dan Healy, former Grateful Dead soundman from 1968 - 1995, as their main front-of-house sound engineer.
Dark Star Orchestra put the wraps on another great summer performing at some of the nation’s hottest festivals, including Bonnaroo, All Good Festival and 10,000 Lakes Festival. This year also saw the band perform in front of sold-out audiences in Europe and heralded many milestones including their 1,500th show and now their 11 year anniversary.
Just over one year after Dark Star Orchestra’s 5/8/77 30th anniversary recreation, this release captures the band recreating one of the most well known shows in the Grateful Dead’s long history. Videotaped live by a multi-camera crew, and mastered by DSO’s own Rob Eaton, this spirited performance is a must-see for fans of both the Grateful Dead and Dark Star Orchestra.
A long and strange trip, since their humble beginnings over a decade ago, the band’s determined commitment to ‘raising the Dead’ has drawn this and much more critical acclaim: "Quite possibly the most talented and accomplished tribute band out there... they've definitely mastered their inspiration's vagabond nature."
"Recreates the Dead concert experience with uncanny verisimilitude... In fact, Dark Star Orchestra often sounds more like the Dead than the Dead sometimes did." – Chicago Tribune
“The hottest Grateful Dead tribute act. A cover band for people who don't like cover bands.” – Washington Post
Critics aren’t the only ones singing Dark Star Orchestra’s praises. Five original members of the Grateful Dead have played alongside DSO and have had this to say: “A couple of times when I had my back to John (Kadlecik) onstage and he started to sing, I had this weird sense that it was Jerry.” – Bob Weir, Grateful Dead co-founder/vocalist/guitarist
“Playing with Dark Star Orchestra is something that feels just exactly like it felt when I was playing with the Grateful Dead.” – Donna Jean Godchaux, Grateful Dead vocalist, frequent DSO guest
Offering a continually evolving artistic outlet within the Grateful Dead’s musical canon, members of Dark Star Orchestra seek out the unique style of each performance era and offer their own interpretations and improvisations at each show. Using entire set lists from the Grateful Dead’s decades of touring as a launching pad, Dark Star Orchestra recreates song for song performances straight from the set list of these historic shows.
