Promoting their new studio album, Tin Can Trust, Los Lobos hit the stage at the Granada Theater in Dallas on Wednesday. The setlist was a fun mix of new and old, original and covers and English and Spanish. The band has had a little rest since their last show and this gig was the start of the end-of-the-year push. The band will do a couple other shows in Texas, and then it’s off to Hawaii, California, wrapping up with a NYE show at the City Winery in New York City.
The show opened up with the title track from their new album, Tin Can Trust. Some highlights from the show were: Shakin’, Shakin’ Shakes, Will the Wolf Survive?, Kiko and the Lavender Moon, and Volver, Volver. Also, there were some great covers: the Temptations’ Papa Was a Rolling Stone, Santana’s Oye Como Va, and the Grateful Dead’s West LA Fadeaway. They played I Got Loaded and threw in a Turn on Your Lovelight tease. To close the set was a cool mash-up of La Bamba > Good Lovin’ > La Bamba.
It didn’t look like they were playing from a setlist, but relied mostly on audience requests. David Hidalgo joked as they started to play their song Angel Dance, that Robert Plant had just recorded it. He said that maybe now it would get heard. After the show, the band made themselves available at the merch table to sign autographs and thank their fans. They produced a vinyl LP of their new album, which was for sale for $20.
