Concert Review by Steve Moyles on 9/22/2013

On Wednesday, Mumford & Sons played their rescheduled Dallas show, the penultimate of the Gentlemen of the Road Tour.  The show was originally scheduled for June 11, however, due to a medical emergency involving bassist, Ted Dwane, several dates including Dallas, were moved to the end of the tour.  They played to a sold out Gexa Energy Pavilion crowd of about 20,000.  The last time the quartet played in Dallas was three years ago, and the venue was the House of Blues Cambridge Room, capacity about 200.  Now, with a Best Album Gammy under their belt, they’re able to fill much larger locations with passionate fans.

The show started with Lover’s Eyes.  They moved through most of their hits, I Will Wait, Whispers in the Dark, Holland Road, Little Lion Man, Lover of the Light, Below My Feet and Babel.  They ended the show with a cover of the Bruce Springsteen tune, Atlantic City and The Cave.  The setlist is pretty much the same for all shows, with some small changes.  What you sacrifice in innovation and spontaneity you gain in well-rehearsed, tight performances.    This was the case at Gexa.  The performance was spot on, accompanied by a horn section and some strings.  Marcus Mumford moved deftly from guitar to mandolin and drums, while Ben Lovett played keys and the occasional accordion. Winston Marshall donned his banjo and an electric guitar for a couple tunes and Ted Dwane switched between the stand-up and the electric bass.

After their final show in Bonner Springs, KS, on Friday, Mumford & Sons will take a well-deserved break.  No word on where they’ll show up next.
