Concert Review by Steve Moyles on 10/24/2014

About halfway through their Fall Tour 2014, Widespread Panic made their annual appearance at the Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie, TX.  This year, different from previous shows at this venue, Panic was co-billed with Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue.  Another difference from prior shows at Verizon was that Panic played a one set show rather than their normal two set format.  The theatre appeared to be filled to about half the 6350 capacity.

After a 50 minute long, energetic set by Trombone Shorty, Widespread Panic took the stage.  With their normal drummer, Todd Nance, “taking time to attend to personal matters,” Hard Working American’s drummer, Duane Trucks filled in. Trucks is the younger brother of the Allman Brothers’ guitar player, Derek Trucks, as well as the nephew of long-time Allman Brothers’ drummer Butch Trucks.  The band opened their show with Up All Night followed by Pleas.  Next, keyboard played, Jojo Herman took over the vocal duties on Bust It Big.  The show moved on to You Got Yours and Pickin’ Up the Pieces.  Up next was crowd favorite, Rebirtha and then an upbeat, Blackout Blues.  The band then slowed things down with This Part of Town.   So far, no tunes had exceeded the ten-minute mark, and there were no real extended jams.  The tempo picked up again with Radio Child, followed by Shut Up and Drive.  To close out the set, Panic played Driving Song ( the most frequently played song in 2014), into an extended, jammed-out Little Lilly, into Drums, which included Dave Schools’ tease of the Grateful Dead’s The Other One, back into Driving Song.  Swamp, a Talking Heads cover ended the set.  The encore was Warren Zevon’s Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Overall, it was an enjoyable show, with most of the songs from the normal rotation.  The only real bust-out was Swamp, which hadn’t been played since Halloween 2010.  Next up on the Fall Tour is Memphis for two nights then on to St. Louis.  Widespread Panic will be celebrating Halloween this year in Broomfield, CO with a three night run at 1st Bank Center.
